What do I enjoy the most about this Thanksgiving season?  Eating a lot of good food with family as a Thanksgiving tradition is wonderful!  However, there is something more important to me than a natural meal.  In the 4th chapter of John, we find Jesus sending his disciples away to purchase lunch.  He then begin to speak to a woman at a water well.  Not an ordinary woman, but a Samaritan with a very poor reputation.  If you have read the story you know she became a follower of Christ.  After this encounter she ran to her city in Samaria and told everyone of her conversion and that Jesus was the prophesied Messiah!  The entire city had a revival!

When the disciples returned from their shopping trip for food, gathering together to eat, they had to constrain Jesus to eat also.  He had been hungry, weary from a day of ministry and travel.  But now He appeared as if He was no longer hungry.  He spoke to them, “I have meat to eat that ye know not of.”  The disciples, so easily looked to their natural understanding, wondering who had brought him something to eat.  Jesus quickly let them know that it is not natural food He was speaking of; “My meat is to do the will of him that sent me and to finish his work.”  The opportunity of saving souls made him forget his weariness and hunger.  Those that work for the Kingdom of God will prefer spiritual work above their natural food. They will make the work of Christ their meat and drink

The work our LORD had to do among the Samaritans was meat and drink to Him; it was the greatest pleasure He could have. He could not enjoy a natural meal, regardless of how wonderful it was served, as He enjoyed doing good to souls.

His work was His meat and drink because it was the Father’s work and the Father’s will; “My meat is to do the will of him that sent me.” He was not only satisfied with doing His work, but perseverant to finish the work. He possessed a resolve never to quit, until he could say, It is finished. Many have zeal to start, but what happens to the zeal to finish?  So many lose it, and just quit.

What I DO as a Pastor is what I AM, it is my PLACE, and it is where I belong.  With steadfastness and perseverance, I must finish my work.  I must always remember; I am a worker with Him, and that work should be my meat!  The work I must do is to PREACH THE GOSPEL, to work for the complete establishment of the Kingdom of the Messiah in His elected people.

As Jesus spoke to the disciples He reminded them of His work as if it is a work of the harvest and indeed it is!  It is the gathering in of the fruits of God!  This is harvest time, naturally and spiritually.  There is nothing more fulfilling than the work of the harvest, a work that means more to me than a wonderful meal.  I certainly love the Thanksgiving season and all that goes with it.  However, the work that the LORD Jesus has called me to do and to finish, is so much more satisfying!

Happy Thanksgiving – Happy Harvest Time!

John 4:32 But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of. 33 Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him ought to eat? 34 Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work. 35 Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.
